Precision Engineering Factory, Lanarkshire
for Aerospace Engineering Company
Competition entry which reached the shortlist of an RIAS-organised competition for a new factory in Lanarkshire for Castle Precision Engineering. MGA proposed a carbon-positive facility for the aerospace engineering company.
The aim was to create an autonomous factory which was self-sufficient in energy inputs and effectively carbon neutral or even carbon-positive. The design hinged around a long, toplit atrium space – which is essential in helping to ventilate the building, and also introduces light into the depth of the plan.
A key of MGA’s strategy was to create a new surrounding woodland which would create a benign micro-climate; hence heat loss from the building envelope would be minimised. These trees would eventually form a cash crop which could be harvested. |
